Donald Trump has declared on social media that the Christian God is going to make Americans more united than they have ever been before:
“America is a Nation of Believers. We need God, we want God, and, with His help, we will make our Nation Stronger, Safer, Greater, more Prosperous, and more United than ever before. Thank you, and HAPPY EASTER.”
In contradiction to Donald Trump’s assertion:
- The United States of America is not a “nation of believers”. The USA is a secular nation, which includes some Christians, but 40 percent of the population is non-Christian.
- Americans are not more united under Donald Trump than they were before. They are even less united than before.
- The Christian God is not making Americans more prosperous than they were before. The United States is teetering on the edge of economic recession, and consumer confidence is plunging down to the lowest levels since the COVID-19 pandemic during Donald Trump’s previous term as President.
American atheists are understandably frustrated to witness Donald Trump’s blatant Christian Nationalist propaganda coming from the White House itself. It can seem that there is no hope for democracy and the decent values of humanism in the USA.
As atheists, however, we also know that there is no destiny directing the United States in any direction, either positive or negative.
Our activism is simple: Speak reasonably. Share the facts that deflate hyperbole.
Many Americans won’t be swayed by this approach, but we don’t need all Americans to be on our side. We only need to convince enough Americans to recalibrate American culture back in the direction of progress and democracy.
Together, we can change America’s course away from the chaos and cruelty of Donald Trump’s Christian Nationalist regime.
