Defending freedom from Christian Nationalism

It’s Time For Atheists To Take
Action

Atheists are thoughtful people. We know how to use our minds to think through puzzles and consider the meaning of the evidence that’s available to us.

In these times, however, atheists face an unprecedented threat from a Christian nationalism that is seizing the power to replace American democracy with a cruel theocracy.

Christian nationalists are in the process of executing a plan that will disempower atheists, along with women, people of color, members of non-Christian religions, and our LGBTQI+ neighbors. They seek to twist the United States into something that it never was: A Christian nation. Their goal is to force everyone to comply with the archaic religious laws of a harsh and hateful version of Christianity that views freedom as a sin.

Clear thinking is always necessary. In our times, it is not sufficient.

It’s Up To Us

We have no gods, no spirit guides, no magic spells to protect us.

Atheists need to take organized action to defend our rights, and the rights of others who are being oppressed by Christian nationalism.

Now is the time when atheists can show the strength of our godlessness.

Democratic Action To Save Democracy

We cannot defeat Christian nationalism by adopting its tactics of conquering control. Their victory would be a dark singularity, a monotheism allowing only one way, one power over all. Our victory, to be true, must be not only opposite in direction but different in kind.

To be an atheist is to stand apart and take the dramatic step of saying no. Beyond that initial step, however, are an infinite number of paths, each leading to their own ends. For us, there is no one true way. So, even as we say no to Christianity, we must respect the right of others to say no in their own ways.

For decades now, Christianity has been on the wane in the United States. This trend isn’t the result of criticism by atheists. It’s the consequence of the actions of Christians themselves. The harder extremist Christian organizations try to control other people’s lives, the more trust they lose, as people see the abuses behind their sermons.

The victory we seek is true freedom of religion, in which every person has the right to follow their own conscience under a government that does not interfere to promote or attack any religion. We seek a country in which religion and philosophy are matters of personal choice rather than the dictate of theocrats in government.
